Fukutontei: A Contemporary Take on Japanese Dining

For over seven years, we’ve partnered with Fukutontei to shape their restaurants as they expand across the dining landscape.

The name itself captures the spirit of the brand: Fuku means happiness, Ton means pork, and Tei means shop – together, “a place where you attain happiness by eating pork, and ramen.” It’s this sense of joy and authenticity that drives the design story.

The Bar as Anchor

The central bar zone serves as the social heart of the venue. Material and lighting shifts distinguish it from the surrounding dining areas, reinforcing its role as both anchor and gathering point.

A Layered Sense of Authenticity

Stepping inside, guests are immediately met with walls wrapped in custom-designed wallpaper graphics and cloth hangings, rich with Japanese motifs. More than decoration, these details ground the space in cultural reference, weaving heritage into the fabric of the interiors while speaking to a modern, urban audience.

Materiality and Mood

A moody palette of dark hues and tactile materials creates depth and intimacy, offset by warm timber accents. Lighting is used almost theatrically – carving out shadow and highlighting texture – to build an atmosphere that feels both immersive and energetic.

Continuing a Shared Vision

Fukutontei reflects the strength of a long-term collaboration, where trust and shared vision have allowed the brand to evolve. Each new space captures the essence of traditional Japanese dining while reimagining it for a contemporary urban setting.
